The junior Heath brother, Albert has had a low-profile career with many high-profile names. His debut on record (1957) was with John Coltrane; he played in The Jazztet, and went to Scandinavia in 1965 to work as the house drummer at the Café Montmartre; and he was the first drummer in Herbie Hancock's sextet (1968). Although he gave up music for a time in the middle 70s, he was drawn back in again and became the last drummer to play in the Modern Jazz Quartet, after Connie Kay's death. He has also worked in The Heath Brothers' family band. A skilful and crafty exponent of bebop drumming, he might fairly wonder why he has received comparatively little acclaim for his playing over the years.
